Zumtobel. The Light.
From afar, the upper part of the building already develops its dramatic effect with a wave-like crown. During the day, the striking silhouette plays with the sunlight. If the sky is overcast, in the evening and at night, the right setting is created by a bespoke lighting solution from Zumtobel. The decorative street and city light Urba from the affiliated Thorn brand within the Zumtobel Group was used for the car park and pathway lighting. The lighting is hereby geared to nature's example and emulates the sunlight’s effects. Depending on the time of day and the relevant lighting situation, the gold-coloured, wave-shaped façade changes its appearance to constantly surprise the viewer. This lighting’s task is to support the play of the waves with contrast and shade and therefore create a sculptural effect. SUPERSYSTEM outdoor takes care of the subtle highlighting of the façade, whereby only the golden crown glows and the lower part withdraws into darkness. A total of 108 LED light tubes distributed over four » SUPERSYSTEM outdoor accent pillars have been positioned to diagonally illuminate the façade at an angle. Each of the 108 light tubes has been individually aligned to the special structure of the horizontal waves so that viewers can experience the effect of this unusual architecture in the best possible way.

… why should we use BIMs?
BIMs generate synergies, they save costs, are global, improve visualization and productivity and simplify coordination. And they are trending –since the portfolio is growing fast and steadily, BIM’s are becoming overall more and more crucial for building documentation.
Since 2011, Zumtobel has offered 3D BIM models in Revit format. Our Revit library has continually expanded since then, always incorporating our newest products. We recently added our latest launch window products MELLOW LIGHT evolution / infinity and VAERO. You can download Zumtobel’s BIM files when you go to an individual product page or search our library.

The initial impulse for the study of the Ludwigsplatz came from the long-standing cooperation with the Technical University in Darmstadt. The architecture students’ workshop task of creating a lighting design for this central square using very concrete and creative light planning approaches is reflected in the study. The best lighting scenes to enliven the somewhat dreary-looking Ludwigsplatz were handed over to Professor Greule. They are now an integral part of the visualisations in various grades of representation, ranging from classic light calculation programmes right through to VR technology. This should also allow for an evaluation of any additional value that may be achieved through the new, more complex technological possibilities. The emotional evaluation as well as people’s orientation based on different night lighting scenes were recorded with the help of the psychologist and lighting planner, Torsten Braun.
There were aggravating influencing parameters to the investigation of the real, urban space, such as the weather or the frequentations levels of the space. The VR laboratory study offers a number of advantages here, but then again the external validity suffers. A subsequent study of the real space is planned to address this issue.
If the VR study focusing on the evaluation of lighting scenes in the context of architecture produces some convincing results, new fields can be developed for the future uses of VR in the lighting industry, for example, digital light showrooms.

Zumtobel. The Light.
Lighting has been identified as a key factor that can enhance the well-being of persons in office environments. Designing lighting solutions for people is at the heart of Human Centric Lighting - providing the right light, in the right amount, at the right time. TunableWhite-technology makes it possible to mimic the dynamics of sunlight, indoors. This means providing cooler white colours in the morning and afternoon, changing to warmer white in the evening and night in order to support the bio-rhythm of people. Additionally, timelines included in lighting controls makes this change automatic and inherent to the lighting solution. It was customary to use cool white light to keep persons alert in a working environment, for e.g. during late night shift work. However, improved ‘shift working’ timelines can be employed, that complement the bio-rhythm instead of modifying it. This ensures that people can have a restful sleep after their shift is finished.5
Right Light for Task
Imagine a meeting room where the lights automatically dim when a presenter starts giving a talk, where a wall washer illuminates a brainstorming wall when you need it or lights that seamlessly create perfect ambience for a meeting around a desk. Autonomous lighting solutions intuitively and automatically react to provide the optimal light. Intelligent sensors and lighting controls make it possible to adjust the light automatically depending on the task at hand. Not only does this ensure a comfortable working environment but it also ensures that the light levels are optimal and energy savings are considered by providing the right amount of light at the place where it is most needed.
Right Light for You
We are all individuals with our own preferences. Lighting preferences vary depending on age, gender, chronotype, working times and various other factors. In general, studies have shown that people prefer to control their own lighting situation and prefer more light compared to the norms. As such, simple and easy to use lighting controls are essential to make the experience a pleasant one. Lighting controls make it possible to personalize the light in individual task areas, be it a private office or individual desk in a team space. An easy to use interface equipped with ‘scenes’ can be used to quickly select a lighting situation depending on the task. Scenes can also be customized or created based on the needs of the user.
The best light for offices goes beyond just the luminaire, encompassing an eco-system of luminaires, intelligent sensors, coupled with lighting controls and even going beyond lighting – into the Internet-of-Things realm – to ensure the most congenial and comfortable environment that enhances the well-being of people.
